How to Write a Resume That Passes ATS

    • Use a simple layout. One column, standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills) and no text inside images.
    • Mirror the job ad. Use the same words the employer uses for skills and tools, where they are true for you.
    • Lead with achievements. Start bullets with an action verb and include a result: a number, percentage or time saved.
    • Keep it focused. One page for early careers, two for experienced roles. Cut anything that does not support this job.
    • Send a text-based PDF. Export with selectable text (this tool does), not a scanned image.

A Simple Formula for Resume Bullets

Action verb + what you did + the result. The bullet coach in the builder helps you rewrite weak ones.

    Before

Responsible for managing the company’s social media accounts.

    After

Managed 4 social media accounts and grew LinkedIn followers from 2,000 to 11,500 in 12 months.

Resume vs CV: Which Do You Need?

In the US and Canada, a resume is a short, tailored summary (1–2 pages) and a CV is a full academic record. In the UK, Ireland, Europe, the Middle East, Pakistan and India, “CV” usually means the same short document. Use whichever word the job ad uses; this builder produces both.

    Resume Builder: Frequently Asked Questions

Is the resume builder really free?
Yes. Building, saving and downloading your resume is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no paywall on the PDF.
    Are the templates ATS-friendly?
Classic and Modern are single-column with standard headings, which applicant tracking systems read reliably. Two-Column looks great for human readers and portfolios, but some ATS read columns out of order, so the tool warns you.
What is the difference between a resume and a CV?
In the US and Canada, a resume is a 1–2 page summary and a CV is a longer academic record. In the UK, Europe, the Middle East and much of Asia, “CV” means what Americans call a resume. This builder works for both.
How do I download my resume as a PDF?
Click Download PDF and choose “Save as PDF” in the print window. The text stays selectable, which is important for ATS.
What does the job description match do?
It picks out the skills and repeated terms from a job ad and shows which ones your resume already mentions. Add the missing ones only if they are true for you, ideally inside an achievement bullet.
Can it write Upwork proposals too?
Yes, with our separate free Upwork proposal generator. Paste a job post and it builds a short, client-first proposal from your own experience.
    Where is my data stored?
Only in your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded to our servers. Use Backup (.json) to move a resume to another device. See our privacy notice.
    Does it use AI?
No AI is called. The resume check, bullet coach and job matching are rule-based and run in your browser.
