Quick Takeaway
Before the holidays, online sellers should refresh their best listings with gift-focused titles, tags and photos, set sale prices from a real former price, check that every discount stays above break-even, and publish order-by dates based on the carrier’s deadlines. For 2026, USPS recommends shipping by Dec. 17 (Ground Advantage) or Dec. 18 (Priority Mail) within the lower 48 states for Christmas delivery.
Key takeaways
- Start in October: listings, photos and stock take longer to fix than you expect.
- A “was $40, now $30” price must be a real price you openly charged for a reasonable period, per the FTC’s pricing guides.
- Run every discount through your break-even price before announcing it.
- USPS 2026 send-by dates for Christmas in the lower 48: Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail Dec. 17, Priority Mail Dec. 18, Priority Mail Express Dec. 19.
- If you can’t ship on time, the FTC’s mail order rule requires a delay notice and an option to cancel with a prompt refund.
For many small online shops, November and December bring the biggest sales of the year and the most stressful weeks. Most holiday problems are avoidable with a few hours of preparation in October: a listing that doesn’t mention gifts, a discount that turns out to lose money, or an order promised for Christmas that ships on Dec. 22.
This checklist covers the three things you control: your listings, your prices and your shipping promises. Dates and rules come from USPS and the FTC, checked in October 2026.
- Holiday order-by date
- A holiday order-by date is the last day a customer can order and still receive the item before the holiday. You work it out backwards: the carrier’s send-by date, minus your processing time, minus a safety day or two.
When should you start preparing for the holidays?
Now, if you are reading this in October. Use this timeline as a guide and adjust it for how long your products take to make or restock.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mid–late October | Pick your 10–20 best gift items, refresh their listings and photos, order stock and packaging |
| Early November | Set sale prices and check margins; write your shipping and returns policy for the season |
| Mid-November | Publish your order-by dates on your listings, shop banner and order emails |
| Late November (Black Friday to Cyber Monday) | Run planned promotions; watch stock daily |
| Early–mid December | Remind buyers of the order-by dates; switch to faster shipping options near the cutoff |
| After the holidays | Process returns, note your best sellers and save what worked for next year |
How do you get listings ready for holiday shoppers?
Holiday shoppers search differently. They often search for who the gift is for and the occasion, not just the product name. Update your top listings first:
- Add gift phrases where they are true and natural: “gift for dad”, “stocking stuffer”, “Christmas ornament”.
- On Etsy, use your 13 tags for gift and occasion phrases; our Etsy tags guide explains how.
- Put the most important words at the start of the title, where shoppers look first.
- Refresh your main photo: a clean background for the first image, then one photo showing the item as a gift or in use.
- Answer gift questions in the description: size, what’s in the box, gift wrap, and whether the receipt shows prices.
- Check that stock counts are accurate, so you don’t sell items you can’t ship.
To save time, our free marketplace listing generator drafts titles and descriptions for eBay, Etsy and Amazon, and the free background remover puts your main photo on a clean white background, right in your browser. Our guide to writing product listings for eBay, Etsy and Amazon covers each platform’s format.
How should you price holiday sales?
Start with your break-even price: every cost per sale, including product, packaging, shipping, marketplace fees, payment fees and ads. Marketplace and payment fees are a percentage of the price, so a discount cuts into your margin faster than it looks. Our guide on how to price products to sell online walks through the math, and the profit calculator in the listing generator shows your break-even price.
Step 1: Find your break-even price
Add every cost per sale. Never discount below this number, even for one day.
Step 2: Choose the deal type
A percentage off, a bundle (“buy 2, save 15%”), free shipping over a threshold or a gift with purchase. Bundles and thresholds often protect margin better than a flat discount.
Step 3: Check the “was” price is real
Only show a former price you actually charged, openly, for a reasonable period (see below).
Step 4: Set an end date
Say when the sale ends, and end it then.
The FTC rule on “was” prices
The FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing (16 CFR 233.1) say a former price comparison is fair only when the former price is the actual, bona fide price at which the item was openly and actively offered to the public for a reasonably substantial period. Raising a price just before a sale so the discount looks bigger is the guides’ own example of a fictitious, deceptive bargain. Tiny reductions advertised as savings can also mislead.
What are the 2026 USPS holiday shipping deadlines?
USPS publishes recommended send-by dates for delivery by Dec. 25. These are the dates on its holiday page, read on Oct. 16, 2026. USPS says actual delivery dates may vary, so treat them as the absolute last day, not your target.
| USPS service | Send by |
|---|---|
| USPS Ground Advantage | Thursday, Dec. 17 |
| First-Class Mail | Thursday, Dec. 17 |
| Priority Mail | Friday, Dec. 18 |
| Priority Mail Express | Saturday, Dec. 19 |
For international orders, USPS lists Wednesday, Dec. 9 for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International, and Wednesday, Dec. 16 for Priority Mail Express International. Military APO/FPO/DPO addresses have earlier dates, with Ground Advantage as early as Nov. 4. Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and US territories have their own table. Check the USPS holiday page for your exact destination, and check UPS or FedEx directly if you use them.
Work out your order-by date: if you ship by Ground Advantage, take 2–3 business days of processing, and want one safety day, your order-by date is about Dec. 11–12. Show it clearly on your listings and in your order confirmation.
What if you can’t ship an order on time?
The FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule applies to online sales. In short, you must have a reasonable basis for any shipping time you state, or for shipping within 30 days if you don’t state one. If you find you can’t ship on time:
- Tell the customer before the promised date, give a revised shipping date (or say you can’t give one) and offer them the option to cancel.
- If they cancel, refund promptly: within seven working days for payments by cash, check, money order or a third-party credit card.
- If you decide you will never ship the item, cancel the order and refund.
This is a summary, not legal advice. The FTC’s business guide linked below has the full rule. Marketplaces such as Etsy, eBay and Amazon also have their own shipping-time and cancellation policies that you must follow.
Which holiday tasks can you automate?
- Order-by date reminders: a scheduled email or banner change in early December.
- Low-stock alerts: a message when an item drops below a set number.
- Order status replies: saved answers for “where is my order?” and “will it arrive by Christmas?”.
- Review requests after delivery (ask, don’t pay or reward for positive reviews).
Tools like n8n can connect your shop, a spreadsheet and email for these; see our n8n automation examples for small business. If you would rather have it built for you, our business process automation service sets up workflows like these.

What is the last day to ship USPS for Christmas 2026?
For the lower 48 states, USPS recommends sending by Dec. 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, Dec. 18 for Priority Mail and Dec. 19 for Priority Mail Express. International and military dates are earlier. These are recommendations, and USPS says delivery dates may vary.
When should I start preparing my online store for the holidays?
Ideally in October. That leaves time to restock, refresh listings and photos, and plan prices before Black Friday. Even a late start helps if you focus on your best-selling 10–20 items first.
Can I show a “was” price on a holiday sale?
Only if it is real. The FTC’s pricing guides say the former price should be one you actually offered openly and in good faith for a reasonably substantial period. Raising a price just before a sale to inflate the discount is deceptive.
What do I have to do if a holiday order will arrive late?
Under the FTC’s mail order rule, tell the customer before the promised date, give a new date if you can and let them cancel. If they cancel, refund promptly, generally within seven working days for most payment types.
Should I offer free shipping for the holidays?
Only if the price covers it. Add the shipping cost into your break-even math first. A free-shipping threshold, such as free shipping on orders over a set amount, can raise order value while protecting margin.
