Google Business Profile Optimization: A 20-Point Checklist

A practical Google Business Profile checklist for local businesses: categories, description, services, photos, reviews, posts and the mistakes that get profiles suspended, with the rules Google actually enforces.

Quick Takeaway

To optimize your Google Business Profile, verify it, choose the most accurate primary category, complete every field (hours, services, description, service areas), add real photos regularly, ask every happy customer for a review and reply to all reviews. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence.

Key takeaways

  • Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and prominence.
  • Your primary category is the most important choice on the profile.
  • Use your real business name: adding keywords to it breaks Google’s guidelines.
  • Ask for reviews from real customers, but never pay for them or only ask happy ones.
  • A complete, active profile with fresh photos and replies earns more trust and clicks.

For a local business in the US, the Google Business Profile often brings more calls than the website. It’s what people see in Google Maps and in the local results at the top of search.

This 20-point checklist follows Google’s own guidelines, so you improve your ranking without risking a suspension. When you’re ready to go further, our SEO services cover local SEO, and our technical SEO checklist covers the website side.

Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free listing that shows a business’s name, location or service area, hours, reviews and photos in Google Search and Google Maps.

How Google Ranks Local Results

The three factors Google names for local ranking
FactorWhat it meansWhat you control
RelevanceHow well your profile matches the searchCategories, services, description
DistanceHow far you are from the searcher or searched areaAccurate address or service area
ProminenceHow well known and trusted you areReviews, links, mentions, website

Setup and Basics (1–6)

  • 1. Verify the profile. Unverified profiles rank poorly and can be edited by others.
  • 2. Use your real business name, exactly as on your signage. No city names or keywords.
  • 3. Choose the most specific primary category (for example “Personal injury attorney”, not “Lawyer”).
  • 4. Add relevant secondary categories only for services you actually offer.
  • 5. Set accurate hours, including holiday hours.
  • 6. Service-area business? Hide your address and list the areas you serve.

Content (7–12)

  • 7. Write a clear description (up to 750 characters): what you do, who for, where, and what makes you different.
  • 8. Add every service or product with a short description and price where it makes sense.
  • 9. Add attributes that apply (for example wheelchair accessible, online appointments).
  • 10. Link to the right page: your website or a location page, with a phone number that matches your site.
  • 11. Add booking or appointment links if you take bookings online.
  • 12. Keep name, address and phone consistent across your website and directories.

Photos and Posts (13–15)

  • 13. Upload real photos: logo, cover, exterior, interior, team and your work. No stock images.
  • 14. Add new photos regularly, for example after each job.
  • 15. Publish updates for offers, events and news; they keep the profile active and give searchers a reason to click.

Reviews (16–19)

  • 16. Ask every customer for a review, with a direct review link by text or email.
  • 17. Reply to every review, positive and negative, calmly and without sharing private details.
  • 18. Never buy, fake or gate reviews. Google bans incentives for reviews, and the FTC’s 2024 rule prohibits fake reviews and suppressing negative ones.
  • 19. Use feedback: recurring complaints are free advice.

What gets profiles suspended

Keywords or city names added to the business name, a virtual office or PO box as your address, multiple profiles for the same business, and fake reviews. Fixing a suspension takes far longer than avoiding one.

Measure (20)

  • 20. Check Performance monthly: calls, website clicks, direction requests and the searches that found you. Use them to adjust services and your description.

Local SEO Beyond the Profile

Your profile works best when the rest of the web agrees with it. Three things support it:

  • Your website: a page for each main service, with your city or service area, phone number and real photos. Link the profile to the most relevant page.
  • Citations: consistent name, address and phone on directories such as Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp and your industry’s directories.
  • Local links and mentions: local news, sponsorships, chambers of commerce and partners linking to your site.

Avoid creating near-identical pages for dozens of cities you don’t serve. Google treats thin “doorway pages” as spam. One genuinely useful page per real service area is better.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

Fixes like the right category, complete information and correct hours can change what you see in a few weeks. Reviews, photos and links build prominence over months. Track calls and direction requests in Performance, and keep a simple monthly routine: new photos, a post, replies to every review.

Automate the Busywork

The most effective habit, asking every customer for a review, is also the easiest to forget. A simple automation can send the request after each job and route unhappy customers to you first, without filtering who gets asked. How do I optimize my Google Business Profile?

Verify it, pick the most accurate primary category, complete every field, add real photos regularly, collect reviews from real customers and reply to all of them.

Can I add keywords to my Google Business Profile name?

No. Google’s guidelines require your real business name. Adding keywords can get the profile suspended.

How do I get more Google reviews?

Ask every customer with a direct review link right after the job. Don’t offer incentives or ask only happy customers.

How long is the Google Business Profile description?

Up to 750 characters. Put the most important information first.

Can I have a Google Business Profile without an office?

Yes, as a service-area business if you visit customers at their location. Hide your address and list the areas you serve. Virtual offices and PO boxes are not allowed as addresses.

Do Google Business Profile posts help ranking?

Google doesn’t say they’re a ranking factor, but they keep the profile active and can increase calls and clicks.
